Welcome

This blog isn't intended as a political platform, but no doubt political, social and economic issues may get posted from time to time, the frequency depending upon the free time and inclination of the Arch One.

Feel free to comment, but keep it polite and legal. At present, comments are available to anonymous users, but abuse will result in them being restricted. Offensive comments will be deleted.

And if you must insult, try to do it with wit and style. Nothing is more tedious than unthinking scatalogical insult, but few things more fun than the acid style of a really good put-down.

I look forward to some energetic discussion. The thread at Samizdata on 'soft-paternalism' (even if it wandered way off topic) was one of the few there in recent months that has been conducted in a reasonably polite manner (with a few notable exceptions). Of course the absence of people like Verity helped.

Good luck.

Sadly there is no prize for being the first to comment, but thank you for your kind wishes.

First post should be up later today, on the subject of Government and the State.

I've been more or less a silent reader of at Samizdata for a while now. There was one who used to post as "Toolkien", whom I miss. Now there are a few who are reasonable (Veryretired maybe), but other than that, it has indeed become nothing but a cheerleading squad. Between Verity and NickM it's hard to even bother reading.

I'm of the Libertarian bent, but I found you well spoken (written?) and often found myself having to really ponder my views, and often couldn't defend them as well as I might like. I'm a firm believer in that if you hold a position, the healthiest thing for it is to have it questioned intellegently to make sure you can still back it up.

Samizdata will be much the worse for lack of that.

Thanks, I'll check in here every once in a while.
